At the foot of the volcanoes, the capital of Auvergne combines the attractions of a city with those of the surrounding countryside and its wooded hillocks. You can’t argue with the quality of life: volcanoes on the horizon, a luscious natural environment, with lakes, mountains and wide-open spaces, a fantastically rich culinary tradition, grapevines, and a rugby team always at the top of their game...
Observe the city-centre bustle from the terrace of a café on Place de Jaude or Place de la Victoire. The museums hold countless delights and cultural seasons of events are packed with new artistic talent. Lose yourself in the Belle Epoque charm of a walk to the spa town.
To the west, the Port neighbourhood offers a rare concentration of heritage with the Romanesque basilica its most beautiful symbol. Listed as a UNESCO world heritage site, as part of the Compostela routes, Notre-Dame-du-Port is famous for its pyramid-shaped apse decorated with rose windows, its sculpted portal and over 250 Romanesque capitals with remarkable decorations.
To the east, between Place de Jaude and the cathedral, the central hillock is the hub everyone passes through on their way to work, to go shopping, to see and to be seen.
The iconic Notre-Dame-de-l’Assomption Cathedral, the first and largest structure built entirely out of Volvic igneous rock, holds a unique collection of mural paintings and stained glass windows from different periods, including rare Romanesque stained glass windows. It was built in the 19th century, under the direction of the famous architect Viollet-le-Duc, who was responsible for the two 90 m spires.
From our hotel, you will only be 5 km from the city centre of Clermont Ferrand.
